But how do these spade bits actually perform?

The thing that we like about these bits is the groove – it’s especially wide, making for slightly quicker drilling than with most similar-priced bits. And since the tip is nice and sharp, these are very easy to use.

Although there’s no titanium coating, the material is still durable, and won’t create excess heat. On the whole, this is a great option if you need a versatile set of spade bits.

2. DeWalt DW1576 Spade Bit

Looking for just a single spade bit?

If you only need a single bit, and aren’t sure what size to get, a 5/8″ option is a good choice. Though it can be on the small side sometimes, this does make the drill bit easier to use, which is good.

We like this bit from DeWalt because of its durability. The shank is nice and thick, meaning it’s very difficult to snap, and the tip stays sharp for the life of the bit.

The other thing that’s good about this spade bit is how clean its holes are. As you can see in the photo, the cutting edges are actually tapered up, instead of pointing up like on most other bits. Meaning, as the bit enters the wood, it makes a much cleaner entry than you might expect. This does slow down the speed at which you can drill a little, however.

Despite how well it performs, this bit is still reasonably priced. It also does a good job removing chips, especially for a spade bit.

3. Bosch Daredevil Spade Bit Set

Like WorkPro, Bosch also make a spade bit set.

This set is a little more expensive than the WorkPro set we’ve already looked at. However, you do get an extra 3 bits in this set.

What Bosch have done with these bits is use a threaded tip, rather than the traditional flat tip you get on most spade bits. This makes for much faster drilling, however it can make these bits a little difficult to use. Sometimes the tip gets stuck, depending on the type of material you’re drilling, making it difficult to begin your hole.

To further increase drilling speed, Bosch have included spurs on the blade, which are very effective at grabbing into the wood. Since they’re not at the very edge of the blade, they don’t make the hole especially messy, since their entry point gets cleaned up by the rest of the bit.

These are pretty durable spade bits, especially in the tip, but they’re not the toughest options out there.

4. Irwin Blue Groove Pro Spade Bits

Irwin are another premium brand in the same price range as the Bosch bits we just looked at. However, we prefer Irwin’s bits, for a few different reasons.

Firstly, their spurs are placed differently, and they have better chip removal capabilities, meaning you get cleaner holes. Although these bits might not be as fast as the Daredevil, they make slightly better holes, and the tradeoff is worth it in our opinion.

Secondly, these bits are a little cheaper than Bosch’s set. Despite this, they still come with a sturdy hinged case – it’s made of ABS plastic, which is quite tough stuff.

Finally, we also like these bits for their durability. They stay sharp for a really long time, and while the shafts aren’t the thickest, they’re extremely resistant to snapping.

Overall, this set is an excellent all-around option – the 8 included bits are tough, and produce very clean holes.

5. Diablo SPEEDemon Spade Bit Set

This is probably one of the cheapest spade bit sets you can buy right now. But why is it so cheap?

For starters, you only get 6 bits, so you’ll need to be sure that the included sizes match the holes you want to drill.

In terms of actual drilling, these spade bits produce fairly clean holes. They’re not perfect, but these bits do a pretty good job, even on hardwood like maple.

The tips on these bits also probably won’t stay as sharp for as long as they would on most other bits. However, the shafts are really thick – they’re definitely not likely to snap.

You don’t get a titanium coating on these bits, which isn’t surprising given their price. Also, they don’t come with a case to store them in.

6. Comoware Spade Drill Bit Set

Rather than going for a titanium coating, Comoware have made the actual bits in this set out of carbon steel. This makes for a really durable set of spade bits for a fraction of the cost of a titanium-coated option.

As for their performance, these spade bits drill pretty well, in large part because the tip stays nice and sharp over time. You get 13 bits in each set, so there’s always a similar-size spare if you need it.

Quite surprisingly (given their price), these bits come with a decent-quality pouch-style case to hold them in, and do an OK job removing chips.

Although these bits won’t be able to drill at an angle, they work pretty well on nearly any material – Comoware state that you can use them on materials such as PVC if you want to. We wouldn’t recommend them for drilling thick material though.

Now we’ll discuss some key things to consider when choosing the best spade bit (or set of spade bits) for your woodworking project.

What are spade bits used for?

Spade bits are normally used to drill holes in wood. They’re an alternative to Forstner bits or hole saws.

You would use a spade bit when you want to drill holes as quickly and efficiently as possible. For example, if you’re looking to pass some wiring through a cabinet, and you don’t need a perfect burr-free hole, a spade bit is a great option.

Due to their shape, spade bits aren’t really appropriate for drilling material other than wood. You would use a step drill bit to drill holes in plastic/metal instead.

Plus, they come with a titanium coating, which does a good job keeping the tip sharp. The sizes of each step are engraved into the bit, ensuring they don’t rub off.

Given the price, these bits work extremely well with sheet metal, including thicker sheets, as well as plastics such as acrylic.

Unlike the unibits we just looked at, this option from DeWalt is designed for impact drivers specifically.

You can still use this bit with a regular drill, but it might be a bit overkill, given how tough it is.

DeWalt’s step bit has a longer, more tapered design than most other options, and a split-point tip to allow for quick and easy drilling. Plus, it bit comes with two flutes rather than one, making for much more efficient chip removal than you’d get with most other step drill bits.

As you’d expect from DeWalt, this bit comes with a titanium coating, and will last a really long time – even if used quite often to drill metal.

This isn’t a cheap bit. However, if you have an impact driver, or just want something to allow for efficient hole drilling, it’s a great pick.

3. Neiko Step Drill Bit

Apart from their kit, Neiko also sells a handy individual step bit which is surprisingly good, given what it costs.

The first thing you need to know about this bit is even though it’s quite cheap, it works on harder materials such as steel. It’s designed to be used on aluminum, copper, and softer alloys, but can also be used to drill steel, as well as other materials such as wood and plastic.

You still get a titanium coating with this bit, which does a good job increasing its usable life. This unibit is available in a few different sizes – this one has steps from 1/4″ up to 1-3/8″.

Ultimately, if you just want a single unibit for use on most types of material, this one is definitely worth considering.

4. Comoware Step Bit Set

This is another step bit set, similar to the Neiko set we originally looked at, except it comes with a wider variety of different drill bits.

There are three different sets available from Comoware, but we like this one because it comes with a center punch, to make it easier to start larger holes.

Counting all of the steps on all five bits, there are 50 different sizes in total, making this a very versatile set. Despite this, it’s not too expensive either.

Each bit comes with a titanium finish, and the split-point tip stays sharp for a really long time. The included case is pretty sturdy too.

The only real downside to these step bits is the measurement markings can wear off quickly. The bits themselves tend to last a really long time, though.

5. Klein Tools KTSB15 Step Drill Bit

The Klein Tools step drill bit is probably the most expensive option you can buy right now. But what do you get in return for the extra cost?

Essentially, this bit is more durable, easier to use, and more efficient than basically anything else out there.

It works on nearly any material, including hard metals, with no issues at all. Plus, the tip is designed specifically not to walk, making it easy to start off your holes, and allowing you to drill more holes more quickly.

As you’d expect given the price, the holes you drill with this bit will be incredibly clean, with next to no burr. You get consistent drilling for the lifetime of the bit.

Another nice thing about this bit is there are silver targets for your main hole sizes, so that you don’t have to tape around the bit to get the size you need. If you tend to have a lot of variation in the sizes of hole you’re drilling, this silver lining can be a very nice thing to have.

6. Zelcan Large Step Bit

This is a similar-size step bit to the Klein Tools option we just looked at.

Like Klein’s bit, this unibit features a double-flute design to maximize chip extraction efficiency, and comes with a titanium coating for durability.

This bit is also a bit bigger – it can drill up to 2-3/8″ diameter holes, and still has 10 steps, which is nice.

However, because it’s a little bit cheaper, this bit isn’t as tough. Although it works fine on most materials, including some metals such as aluminum, it isn’t the best option for tougher metals, such as steel.

Despite not being the most durable option, Zelcan’s step drill bit is quite fast when compared to other options, especially cheaper bits. This is the main reason this bit is worth considering, given it’s a little on the expensive side.

7. Irwin Tools Unibit

To drill smaller holes, it’s often easier to use a longer, thinner bit, like this option from Irwin Tools.

This is because although larger bits technically allow you to drill a larger number of different-size holes, their size can make them difficult to use in certain situations where the area you want the hole is obstructed or difficult to reach.

Irwin’s step bit is a simple single-flute option, designed to drill small holes as easily as possible. It’s very easy to control how you progress through the steps, allowing you to make the hole as big (or as small) as you want, which is great.

Some larger unibits have a larger tip diameter, meaning they must be used to enlarge holes that have already been started using other drill bits, or using a center punch tool.

Since step bits do not have the same type of traditional-shaped flutes that you would expect to find on a drill bit for plastic for example, they do not do a good job efficiently removing chips, making them less appropriate for drilling through deep material.

There are a number of benefits to using step drill bits over a hole saw or traditional-shaped drill bit.

1. They allow you to drill different-diameter holes with the same bit.

They come with a nice sharp tip, which makes for a clean entry into both hard and soft plastic. Amana’s bits are also designed to prevent grabbing or tear-outs, making them especially easy to use for beginners.

In this particular set, you get 5 drill bits, each 1/8″ in diameter,. It would be good to see a greater variety of sizes on offer, but for most use-cases, these drill bits work well.

This set isn’t a cheap option compared to some others on the market, and especially given you only get 5 bits. However, if you regularly drill into plastic or acrylic, we’d definitely this set – the bits are particularly durable.

2. DeWalt Brad Point Drill Bit Set

Brad point bits (also known as dowel bits) are especially good for drilling into plastic.

This is because they come with an ultra-sharp four-point tip, designed to make an easy, clean entry into the material you’re drilling, without using excessive force.

Essentially, this means you can drill into plastic with ease, without having to apply so much force that you crack the material. However, you do need to be gentle when using these bits on hard plastic, like acyrlic, in order to create a clean hole.

These bits are especially good because the flutes are extra-wide. This is important because plastic chips don’t break up easily, so it’s good to have a bit that can remove chips efficiently to prevent heat buildup.

Given what you get, the price is pretty reasonable for these bits. The only issue with them is they’re not specifically designed for plastic, like the Amana bits we just looked at are.

3. Neiko Titanium Step Drill Bit

Rather than using a Brad point/dowel/spur bit, you can also use a step drill bit to make clean holes in plastic.

This is sort of similar to using a regular bit with a steep angle tip, except step bits will offer more control over your drilling.

Since the tip is so small, and the hole is gradually enlarged as you continue drilling, it’s much easier to begin your hole exactly where you want it. And as you’d expect, step bits (also known as uni bits) offer a much cleaner entry than traditional drill bits when working with plastic.

This step bit from Neiko is good because it clears chips quickly, due to the two-flute design.

However, although it’s reasonably-priced, it’s not as durable as it probably should be. The tip can wear away over time if used repeatedly on hard plastics.

4. DeWalt Brad Point Bit Set

This is another Brad point drill bit set that works great for drilling into most types of plastic.

As you’d expect from DeWalt, these are excellent-quality bits, and they’re extremely durable.

However, they are a bit cheaper than you might expect. And as a result, they don’t produce the cleanest-possible holes. Unless used in perfect conditions, you might get some jagged edges at the top or bottom of your material.

Despite this, the Brad point design does well to allow for easy drilling – the bit won’t “walk” across your surface, which is great.

Ultimately, this set is a good pick if you need to make quick and easy holes in hard or soft plastics.

For drilling harder plastics such as acrylic and plexiglass, you might want a stronger bit with a more traditional tip.

This option from Source One is designed to make a clean entry into hard plastics, without cracking the surface. It also pulls out chips nice and fast, ensuring you don’t get massive excess heat buildup.

Source One’s bit is a little expensive, but it’ll last a really long time. Just ensure that you get the right size, since you can’t buy this drill bit as a part of a set.

Unfortunately, the shape of the tip doesn’t make this a great bit for drilling through softer, traditional plastics. It can bounce quite a lot unless you pre-drill a pilot hole.

However, for anything harder than polyethylene, this bit works great.

For soft or medium-density plastics, it’s always nice to have a set of step drill bits like this, especially if you want to drill a heaps of different-size holes.

What we like about this set is the variety of different bits you get, all at a fairly decent price-point.

Given their reasonable price, the durability is great, due to the titanium coating. If you’re only ever going to be drilling plastic, these bits will stay sharp basically forever.

These bits are also designed specifically not to walk, making it especially easy to make a clean hole. What’s more, they’re compatible with 1/2″, 3/8″, and 1/4″ chuck sizes.

If you like the idea of drilling plastic with step bits, then this set is probably your best pick.

How To Find The Best Drill Bits For Plastic

Bosch sell their bits individually, meaning you can save a little money if you know what you need. However, if you’re drilling a number of different-diameter holes, it may end up costing you more to get all the bits you need.

Note: ensure that you have a drill that takes SDS+ bits before buying. SDS is the rotary hammer standard chuck type.

The issue is, if used mostly for concrete, these bits will wear out more quickly than something like the Bosch bits we just looked at.

However, this isn’t to say that they’re brittle. They actually do a pretty good job going through concrete, and don’t become dull as quickly as you might expect, given the price.

Although they’re advertised as multi-purpose, these are really masonry-oriented drill bits, meaning they work great for concrete. We wouldn’t recommend them if you’re mostly going to be drilling glass though.

This is one of the cheapest masonry bit sets you can buy right now, in terms of price per bit. But should you buy it for drilling concrete?

Despite the price, these are reasonably durable drill bits. They come with a slightly larger tip than most other options, meaning more protection for the shaft.

However, they will wear out quicker than most other bits from premium brands. There are spares though, and you do get a plastic case.

The manufacturer actually recommends the use of water with these drill bits, to help clean out dust more efficiently.

If you were planning to drill with water anyway, this isn’t a problem. However, there are concrete bits out there that perform well even without water.
